Parts of Mascot inside a groundwater ban

Parts of Mascot are included in the NSW Government’s ban on using Botany Sands groundwater for domestic purposes, a ban that has been in place since 2006. In those parts, a household plan that leans on groundwater is a non-starter. Bayside Council publishes the Mascot, Rosebery and Eastlakes Flood Study, a 2019 report by WMAwater. It says the eastern side of the study’s Mascot catchment drains either through the piped drainage system or through soakaways that rely on water soaking into the Botany Aquifer. Where drainage relies on soaking away, how fast water clears tends to depend on the ground as well as the pipes.

What we handle in Mascot

Digging in sand, sharing a building, regular upkeep and the fee.

Anything gushing or stopped dead this morning is for our Emergency Plumber page. These cards stick to planned jobs, worked out before something fails.

Shallow water in the aquifer.

The flood study records the soil within its catchment as typically sand. Separately, the NSW Government’s water page on the Botany Sands Groundwater Source says deep holes dug for pools, building works and even large trees may occasionally reach the shallow groundwater within the aquifer. So when a repair means going down to a buried line, the ground can shape the job as much as the pipe. A repair that goes below ground

A lot of neighbours sharing pipework.

Most homes here are flats. In a block, some pipework usually serves more than one home, so a problem showing in one flat can concern the neighbours, the owners corporation and the building manager as well. Getting the right people talking before work starts tends to save a second trip. Plumbing for owners corporations and building managers

Servicing that pays its way.

Hot water units, drains and gas appliances that get a regular look usually cost less to keep running than to replace in a hurry once one fails. In a building full of flats, a round of checks can often be arranged through whoever manages it.

Fee talk comes early.

Whether a call-out fee applies depends on the visit. If yours has one, you hear the figure up front, not for the first time on an invoice.

Frequently asked questions

Not for domestic purposes in the parts of Mascot included in the ban. The NSW Government's Temporary Water Restriction (Botany Sands Groundwater Source) Order 2024 runs from 28 June 2024 to 30 June 2030, and the ban on domestic use dates back to 2006.

We can't tell you from here. The flood study says the eastern side of its Mascot catchment drains either through pipes or through soakaways, but it doesn't say which properties drain which way. Where a yard drain actually goes is something to find out on site.

Some in the wider flood study area said so. In the flood study's community questionnaire, covering Mascot, Rosebery, Eastlakes and the Botany Wetlands and Pagewood catchment, some affected residents reported raising laundries above flood levels. A laundry that moves usually takes its water and drain connections with it.
