A valley floor that was a wetland first

The low centre of Marrickville was once a freshwater wetland called Gumbramorra Swamp, which ran south towards the Cooks River. After major flooding in May 1889 it was drained by cutting the Eastern, Central and Western Channels and building two pumping stations. Council’s own flood consultant names three Sydney Water pump stations as a distinguishing factor of this catchment, at Sydenham, Mackey Park and the northern end of Carrington Road. So in the low parts of the suburb, the public system a private line feeds into leans partly on pumps.

What we handle in Marrickville

Rain with nowhere to go, ground that varies street to street, and cost.

A failure that is live right now belongs over on the Emergency Plumber page. The four cards here all get a time agreed first, while nothing is broken.

Rain that leans on pumps in the low streets

Surface water here cannot simply run across the suburb to the river, and the levee at Mackey Park that keeps the river out also keeps local runoff in. Council’s flood study modelled the pump at the Sydenham storage pit reaching full capacity within half an hour of the rain starting, in most of the storms it tested. When the public system is that busy, a private line that is already part blocked usually has little room to spare. What we do about a line that will not clear

Ground that changes between one end and the other.

Council’s consultant found Marrickville Valley sitting on several soil landscape groups rather than one: alluvial soil along the south-eastern edge, residual soil across the north, erosional soil following Illawarra Road. Different ground can treat buried pipework differently, so one street is not always a safe guide to the next. The buried pipework side of the job

Done before the weather, not after.

Put a hot water unit, the gas appliances and the drain lines on a set servicing interval and the bill is smaller than meeting any of them mid-failure. Council reckons flooding here arrives within hours of the rain, so there is no slow warning to work with.

Cost first, not last.

Not every job here comes with a call-out fee, and when yours does, we name the amount while the time is being agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Council describes flooding across the Inner West as flash flooding, usually arriving within six hours of the rain that caused it. Marrickville Valley also leans on pumps to help clear its low-lying streets, so the public system is working hard in the same storm. There is no slow build-up to watch for.

Both. About half the homes in Marrickville are flats or apartments. Council's own description of the valley puts dense housing and light industry side by side.

Yes, that is ordinary work for us. The Marrickville Industrial Area sits on low, flat ground, and council's flood study found it affected in every flood it modelled. Low, flat ground usually makes it harder to get good fall on a private line, and the yard often shares the problem.

Yes. Hydro City Plumbing is a licensed and insured Sydney plumber, and we're happy to provide details before any work starts.
